Status effects have two main variants, one which affects only one card, and one which affects the character, i.e., slow has a variant which increase the cast turn on 1 card and another which increase the turns on all cards including the one being cast. It is also notable that applying a status of the same type to a character always replaces the previous status, with the exception of some hero abilities, i.e., burn damage from Burning Missile will be replaced by burn from a perked smoking missile even though it has less damage and duration.
